THE BUILD 005 — Worth The Last Hour
On NightBreed Picnic, the bass swallowed the hook — audible only from the next room. The fix went into the master and took the last hour before upload.
The desk is the one spot in the room the mix was built for. Every balance call gets made there, so every balance call checks out there.
The next room doesn’t owe you that. Through a wall, the detail goes and the shape stays — what sits on top, what sits underneath. That’s closer to how most people actually hear a record: from somewhere else, over something small, half paying attention. From there, the hook wasn’t on top. The bass was.
Nothing has to be broken for this to happen. Low end set at the desk can do exactly what it was asked and still sit over the one part a listener is supposed to leave with.
So the master came back open with an hour left before upload.
The cost was the hour. The last one — the one that was supposed to be for uploading and being done.
That’s the check you finish with. Not louder, not closer — closer only tells you what the desk already did, in more detail. Further away. The desk tells you whether the parts are right. The next room tells you whether the song survives someone who isn’t trying to hear it.
Worth the hour.
