THE BUILD 002 — Take Something Out

When a song needs something, I take something out. It’s right more often than not. It’s also slower than adding would be.

The instinct when something’s missing is to add. Another layer, another part, something to fill the hole you can hear. It’s the fastest way to make the feeling go away.

More often than not, the thing that was missing turns out to have been something in the way. The hole wasn’t empty. It was crowded, and I was hearing the crowd as an absence. Pull the right track and the song doesn’t get smaller — it gets louder without anyone touching a fader.

The price is time.

Adding is one move. You hear the gap, you fill it, you’re done. Subtracting is a test. You pull a track, you listen, you decide whether the song survived it. If it didn’t, you put it back and pull a different one. Every guess costs a full pass, and most guesses are wrong.

Some sessions end with the track exactly where it started and nothing to show but the knowledge that it belongs there.

Adding is faster. That’s most of what’s wrong with it.
